Description
The walk starts with a gentle climb of 700 meters. The path rises gradually through forest and is easy to walk. After the climb the rest of the path is quite evenly. The Planina Duplje that you cross on your way to the lake gives you the real feeling of being in the mountains. The view of the lake with the Krn mountain at the other end is marvelous.
If you have the time, you can visit the small lake Dupeljsko jezero surrounded by serenity on your way back.
This is a good walk when the weather is rainy and you still want to walk. The path is easy and nowhere slippery or dangerous.
How to get there
On the road from Bovec to Kranjska Gora turn right to the crossroad to Lepena a few hundred meters after kilometer post 13.0. Drive this road through the Lepena valley until the end (about 6,1 kilometers) and park at the lodge Dom dr. Klementa Juga.
During the walk
The path is clearly marked and starts some 30 meters to the right of the Dom. Short after the path rises in the forest there is a sigh in Slovene stating that you can choose between an easier path and a shorter path, the choice is yours. The “Normalna” path is the shorter and steeper path, “Lazja malo daljsa…” the easier path (to the right). We preferred the longer easier path that rises more gentle, so that will show in the GPS track that can be downloaded.
At the end of the climb you arrive at the top cable station used to transport goods. From the parking till that point you gained 680 meters, in case you want to know.
From there you walk rather level between mountains. In this section there is a pole with the different snow levels in April from 1987 onwards, a very nice gesture!
When the path slightly descends towards the valley Planina Duplje, take the path to the right, the path towards left leads to the mountain hut Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih (you will pass the hut on your way back if you want).
After walking through the open valley, the path rises gently and after a few minutes you will see the large lake Krnsko jezero.
On your way back you can visit the small lake Dupeljsko jezero, otherwise use the same path as you came.
While walking through the open valley, there are stables to the left of the path. About 60 meters after that, take the path straight ahead to the mountain hut, not the path slightly to the left uphill the way you came. After 6 minutes you arrive at the mountain hut Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih. Continue on the path with the mountain hut at your right. About 60 meters past the hut there is a path to the right that descends to the small lake Dupeljsko jezero.
On your way back, when arriving at the point where you turned right to the small lake, now continue to the right, so with the mountain hut behind you. After 150 meters you arrive at the main path again. Continue on that path to walk back to the Lepena valley.
