Slap Brinta, Gregorčičev slap, Slap Malenšček - Details
Description
During this walk you experience fairly large height differences, depending on what you want to do.
You can choose to walk to the Brinta waterfall and back, or continue to the Gregorčičev waterfall and even the Malenšček waterfall. The first part of the walk to the latter two is the same path, later on the paths to both waterfalls split up (there is a waypoint of the junction included in the waypoints download).
The Malenšček waterfall is actually above the Brinta because it is part of the same stream (called the Malenšček stream). The Gregorčičev waterfall (named after one of the most beloved Slovenian poets Simon Gregorčič) is part of the Volarja stream.
Caution
I checked the path in 2019 and it is still possible to do the walk, but clearly the path is not maintained.
During rain the path down into the gorge can be problematic, it may be better to choose another day. One or two sections are rather steep and not secured. This is not a problem when the ground is dry, but if rainwater flows along the path it is very slippery.
Easy check for water levels
If you would like to check the water levels of the Malenšček and Volarja streams to see if going to the waterfalls is worth the effort, you can drive to the bridge over the Volarja stream in Selišče, a hamlet a little further between Kamno and Volarje. Here you see the combined throughput of the Volarja, Malenšček and Mrzli streams. The latter two flow into the Volarja more upstream.
How to get there
Drive the old road from Kobarid to Tolmin via Kamno (cross the Napoleon bridge at Kobarid).
At the beginning of Kamno, turn left to Vrsno and Krn. After about 1,6 kilometers, turn right to Selce.
In the hamlet Selce where the road ends, drive to the end of the road and park on the little square.
During the walk
There is a sign on one house for Gregorčičev slap and Slap Brinta. Walk eastward leaving some houses at your right hand. The road becomes a gravel road and turns to the left, ending in a meadow. You will be guided by signs to Slap Brinta along the meadow, to a fence after which you descend into the gorge.
The descend into the gorge is about 80 meters. You reach the Malenšček stream and have to cross it over boulders. At the opposite side of the stream a sign points you to the left to Slap Brinta, which is less than 5 minutes away. Another sign points you to the right to Gregorčičev slap (and the Malenšček slap, not mentioned).
If you go to Gregorčičev slap, you will reach a point after 15 minutes where there is a tree with a registration book (in 2008 it was in a piece of tree trunk, which was fallen of the tree in 2013). At that point you should be able to see the Gregorčičev waterfall straight ahead. From there you can go left, uphill to the Malenšček waterfall, or a little downhill and then along the slope with some scree parts to the Gregorčičev waterfall. The last part to the Gregorčičev waterfall is a little difficult, but with the ropes provided by kind people it can be done without to much danger.
I recommend going to the Gregorčičev waterfall first after you went to the Brinta, it is less demanding. Also, if you already went to see the Brinta and it has little water, the Malenšček might not be worth the climb.
Trip information
Important note:
The GPS track is of the walk to all three waterfalls together.
The numbers for duration, length and height difference are split up in sections to give you an idea in case you don’t want to go to all three waterfalls. These numbers are not to destination and back like evereywhere else on this website. At the end of each section you will find totals for the whole walk.
