Martuljek falls - Details

Description
A hike that has every aspect that a hike can have in Triglav National Park: a beautiful gorge, attractive forests, a very nice waterfall during the walk, some physical exercise and a reward at the end in the form of another waterfall with an adventurous approach.

How to get there
Drive to Gozd Martuljek. Coming from Kranjska Gora, after driving halfway through Gozd Martuljek, there is a 90 degrees bend to the left, followed by a bridge over the Sava Dolinka. Before that bend, there is a parking on the right beside a big house. Park there.
Coming from Jesenice, after driving halfway through Gozd Martuljek, cross the bridge over the Sava Dolinka. Directly at the end of a 90 degrees bend to the right there is a parking on the left side before a big house. Park there.

Two possible paths
The walk is well way marked with red-white dots. There are two ways to reach the lower waterfall, both are shown in the track that you can download. The track uses the forest path on the way up and the path through the gorge on the way back.
It might not be possible to walk through the gorge which you can reach in less than 15 minutes because of high water or damage due to earlier weather conditions. In that case you can use the alternate path through the forest that doesn’t follow the gorge.

During the walk
Walk along the main road in the direction of Kranjska Gora (west) for about 70 meters, and turn left on a small paved road called Zgornje rute.
Some 700 meters (after 8 minutes) from the parking you walk along the corner of a meadow. At that point you can choose the path to the left to reach the gorge, or the path to the right to walk up through the forest.

The path to the left (through the gorge):
This path goes to the gorge of the Martuljek river. It is nicer and you will see the lower waterfall on your way up. After you reached the waterfall, continue on that path, and you will reach another path (the alternate path) where you turn left following the sign to the upper waterfall (Zgornji Martuljkov Slap).
If the river water level is too high in the gorge and you cannot cross the river, you could go back to the meadow and use the other path that goes up through the forest.

The path to the right (through the forest):
This path goes uphill through woods. After about 25 minutes, watch for a sign to the lower waterfall (Spodnji Martuljkov Slap) that branches of to the left. Take that path to go slightly down and reach the first waterfall.
If you just want a short walk, you can continue on that path, it goes down to the gorge of the Martuljek river and you can walk back to Gozd Martuljek.
Otherwise, walk back up to where you took the path to the left and continue the walk (turn left) to the upper waterfall.

After both paths join together you continue through forests to reach the upper Martuljek fall after about 50 minutes. The waterfall drops into a basin that can be reached after a short scramble along a crack in the mountainside, secured with steel pins and cables.
